The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has reiterated its commitment to expediting the delimitation of constituencies and subsequently announcing a schedule for the general elections. This assurance was given during a meeting with a delegation from the PMLQ at the ECP Secretariat in Islamabad.
The purpose of the meeting was to discuss a roadmap for the upcoming elections. In recent days, the ECP has been engaging in consultations with various political parties regarding the electoral roadmap. This comes in light of the ECP’s decision to rule out holding elections this year, as the constitutional deadline for conducting polls, as mandated under Article of the Constitution, is set to expire in November.
This decision is based on the necessity to await the results of the new digital census and adhere to Section of the Elections Act, which stipulates that constituency delimitation must follow the publication of each official census.Additionally, the Tehreek-e-Labbaik Pakistan (TLP) expressed concerns about its lack of media coverage in comparison to other political parties.
They called for improved poll monitoring, the removal of deceased individuals from the voter list, and an increase in staff to facilitate the speedy delimitation process. Furthermore, the TLP emphasized the need to empower union councils across the country to strengthen the local government system.
The meeting, presided over by Chief Election Commissioner Sikandar, addressed these important electoral matters.
