Japan began releasing wastewater from the crippled Fukushima nuclear plant on Thursday in an operation it insists is safe . China has accused Japan of treating the Pacific like a sewer . Social media posts in China and South Korea have included false claims about the release including doctored images of deformed fish with claims they were linked to Fukushima . China and Hong Kong have not objected to the release of radioactive material .
China banned food imports from out of Japanese prefectures and imposed radiation checks. Restaurants in Hong Kong and Macau have also imposed radiation tests and said it is concerned that it would be affected by the release. The Japanese government has not agreed to use the release .
