ECP again defers Imran Khan’s indictment in contempt case . ECP

Election Commission of Pakistan ECP again deferred the indictment of Imran Khan in the contempt case with the expremier now expected to be charged at the next hearing on August . The ECP had initiated contempt proceedings against the PTI chief party leader Asad Umar and former information minister Chaudhry last year for allegedly using intemperate language against the chief election commissioner and the electoral watchdog .

The three had challenged the ECP notices and contempt proceedings in various high courts on the grounds that Section of the Elections Act which is the statutory provision regarding the commissions power to punish for contempt was against the Constitution .

The election watchdog had issued a nonbailable arrest warrant for Imran on July and asked the Islamabad police chief to arrest and present him before the commission . The very next day Imran appeared before the election watchdog for the first time since August last year when the case was initiated .

The hearing was subsequently adjourned till August . Separately, the commission also issued a notice to the . PTI Chief to appear before the . ECP on Friday at am am regarding the party’s intraparty elections which were due to be held on June . It warned that a failure to appear may lead to the ECC declaring the party ineligible to obtain an election symbol for future elections .

It also warned that failure to provide a certificate regarding intrapartial elections may lead for the PTi to be declared ineligible to receive an election logo for the . election symbol may lead the PT. to the PT . to be . to the PTC may not hold an electoral symbol for a failure of the .
