Senate passes Army Act amendment bill proposing up to 5 years in jail for disclosing sensitive information

The Senate passed a bill to amend the Pakistan Army Act which proposes up to five years in jail for anyone who discloses sensitive information . The bill titled Pakistan Army Amendment Act was moved by Defence Minister Khawaja Asif . PPP Senator Raza Rabbani staged a walkout over passing the bills terming them ‘blind legislation’ The bill also proposes introducing of Section AA power to issue instructions to carry into effect the provisions of this Act and the rules and regulations made thereunder provided that all such instructions already made and issued shall always be deemed to have been valid and issued under this act .

It states that anyone who violates the aforementioned conditions upon their conviction by the court will be punished with rigorous imprisonment for a term which may extend to two years or a fine or with both . It also states that such a case will be dealt with according to Section civil offences of the Army Act read with the Official Secrets Act .

It further says that those who have remained posted employed seconded tasked on sensitive duties are forbidden from taking part in political activity of any kind during a period of five years from the date of his retirement release release release resignation discharge removal or dismissal from the service .

The law does not apply to those who seek prior approval from the COAS for the above . The legislation does not affect those who are subject to the above. The bill proposes introducing Section A conflict of interest B electronic crimes and C defamation .

It proposes introducing Sections A conflict to the law . It is also proposing introducing of the law to introduce Section AA . The Act to introduce of Section A . to the Act . The Senate Chairman Sadiq Sanjay Sanjrani put the motion up for vote after which it was rejected.
